Videoclip

What is a videoclip?

A videoclip or music video  is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes.

Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings.

Although the origins of music videos date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium.

Some commons characteristics are:

  • Its structure is based on the musical theme or song that is.
  • Its aim is to promote a song to reinforce the image of the group or artist.
  • It is a combination of music, image and verbal language (sometimes also includes sound effects, dialogue or silence).
  • Create a language and aesthetics that mark specific style and reinforce the publicity of the song.

Types

  • Narrative: tells a story as a movie. The singer is usually the protagonist of the story, while singing or dancing. The relationship between image and music can be linear (the image point to point repeats the lyrics of the song), adaptation (there is a parallel story to the song) and overlay (it tells a story regardless of the song).

  • Descriptive: it doesn't tell a story. The band acts and images will combine with music repeating the structure.

  • Conceptual: it uses the metaphor. It tells the story in a linear fashion, but creates atmosphere with colors and shapes that help to feel the music.

  • Mixed: combining various types.
