Sound levels

Sound Expression

As we know, sounds used in the radio can come from:

  • Human voice
  • Music
  • Environment sound: sound effects that accompany the action as background sounds in a live connection or music and human voice that acts like effects.

These three elements come into play through the sound levels that will see below.

The voice and music can be protagonists themselves.

Finally, the silence (no sound) value of the sounds preceding and following, so it has tremendous potential expressive, which should be used with caution.

Types

Sound levels determine the situation of different sounds: time, place, or intention.

  • Spatial narration: places us in space, where the action takes place and the changes that affect (wind, birds, traffic noise ...).

  • Presence: indicates the distance (near or far) the sound with respect to the listener, placing it in the main plane (near or far from the foreground). Depending on the distance to the occurrence or are the plans will be:
                                          - Foreground: the sound source located next to the listener, not the main plan.

                                          - Mid or normal: the sound source situated at a distance of prudent listener.

The sound is near the main plane but not in it.

                                          - General plan: Place your are at some distance from the listener, creating a sensation of depth.

                                          - Background: it is a plan created by the presence of several sounds,

in which some sound always away and  others close.

  • Temporary storytelling: place the time in which the action occurs. Past, Present, Future (electronic sound effects), timeless (no defined time), out of time.
  • Intention: has a specific intent to emphasize something: a foray into fantasy or dream, complicity ..

To achieve these levels we need the presence of the master plan, the intention in the interpretation, the intention in the text, the environment or background ...

The story goes building combining all these features.
