ANDY WARHOL AND POP ART

We talked about Pop Art in class and , of course, Andy Warhol, the American artist, father of this movement.

POP ART  is an artistic movement from the 50s and 60s that used advertising, famous movies, famous people to create art. The idea was to move it nearer to people: Art was for everybody, not only for intellectuals in museums or galleries.

ANDY WARHOLD,  the most important figure, was an American photographer. Some of the characteristics of his works were: repetition of images, colourful pictures, use of photographs, colours contrast.

COLOURS AND ADVERTISING

Would you buy milk in a red container? Would you drink water in a brown bottle? Or woul you flight in a black plane? Of course, maybe you wouldn´t  because  red is associated to blood, brown to mud or black to death... Each colour has different meanings and advertising world knows it really well. After some explanations and examples in class,  6th Grade students made in groups their advertisements.

ST. PATRICK´S DAY CRAFT

March 2016

Yesterday, the 17th of March, was St. Patrick´s Day. Ethan told the 6th grade students all about the Irish origins of this celebration. It´s celebrated in Ireland, England, Canada and U.S.A. The symbols are the shamrock and the leprechan.

Some children made a shamrock craft with green card stripes.

PEACE DAY

January 2016

This year we had a nice and motivating activity for Peace Day celebration. Children from each group ( 4th, 5th and 6th grade) worked together decorating their peace symbols with our language assistant´s help.

  •  4th level students decided to start making a newspaper collage. Then, while some of them were painting the dried collage, the rest of the group searched for the  letters that would compose the words peace, paz, love, amor to stick on the symbol.
  •  5th level children made a recipe: Ingredients for peace . They coloured the words in English and Galician to make a collage:

       freedom- liberdade                 respect- respecto

     amability- amabilidade            trust-  confianza

  help- axuda                            smile-  sorrisa

         love- amor                             patience- paciencia

  •  6th grade students read the instructions in English for making a dove in origami paper. With some help, they made lots of birds with different colours and sizes for their peace symbol.
