4. Caixón Desastre

A que dixenSpanglish refers to the code-switching of English and Spanish in the speech of people who speak parts of two languages, or whose normal language is different from that of the country where they live. For example, the Hispanic population of the United State and the British population in Argentina use varieties of Spanglish.

EXAMPLES:

·     Deliberar groserías  (Deliver groceries : repartir comestibles, levar á casa a compra)

·     Vacunar la carpeta  (Vacuum the carpet : aspirar a alfombra)

·     Cuquear el lonche  (Cook : cociñar  /  Lunch : xantar)

·    Llamar para atrás  (Call back : devolver a chamada)

Sometimes people use words from both languages:

  •   Anita: "Hola, good morning, cómo estás?"
  •   Mark: "Good, y tú?"
  •   Anita: "Todo bien. Pero tuve problemas parqueando mi carro this morning."
  •  Mark: "Sí, I know. Siempre hay problemas parqueando en el area at this time".

And you can even read a novel in Spanglish: Yo Yo Boing!  by  Giannina Braschi

Chora The Irish Great Famine

Let’s listen to this song about the Great Famine by one of the most famous singers in Ireland, Christy Moore. In Ireland under British rule, the Great Famine was a period of mass starvation, disease and emigration between 1845 and 1852. It is also known as the Irish Potato Famine. During the Famine, approximately one million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland. The cause of famine was a potato disease, but other factors worsened the situation. Britain had control over the region, and most of the land was owned by wealthy British citizens. Each family had only a small area in which to plant crops and most of the population lived only on potatoes. The British did not remedy the situation. Some people think they seemed to do the opposite. In fact, during the worst years of the famine, Irish lands continued to export food. The effects of the Great Famine permanently changed the island's demographic, political and cultural landscape, and the famine entered folk memory.
